As part of its continued evolution, the Risk Information Alliance (RIA) has carried out not one, but two more pilot assessments focussing on (1) the Sweden Forest sector and (2) the Indonesian Cocoa sector, using the Alliance’s established methodology.

These pilots seek to put into practice the joint indicators, methodology, and processes that RIA has collaboratively developed over the past year. The Sweden assessment was led by SBP, while the Indonesia assessment was coordinated by Preferred by Nature, with support from consultancy experts, ensuring both solid technical expertise and strong local insight throughout the process.

For each sustainability topic, ranging from land use, land management, ecosystems and biodiversity to social rights, each assessment outlines the country context by compiling, among other elements, relevant legislation, a description of the legal framework, and an overview of on-the-ground conditions.

The findings are supported by local stakeholders’ expertise as well as a range of documented sources, including reports, studies, and articles.

The Cocoa pilot also brings together a new format to present the information collected, aiming for a more user-friendly experience while retaining depth and accuracy.

About the public consultation

Stakeholder input is essential to ensure the assessment accurately reflects conditions on the ground and helps inform practical risk mitigation approaches.

A targeted public consultation is therefore being launched, focusing on the technical content of the assessment. The consultation will remain open until August 15th, 2026

The aim of this consultation is to collect stakeholder feedback to validate or challenge the findings, highlight any gaps, and contribute additional information that may help strengthen the overall risk assessment.

Who can participate?

The consultation is open to a broad range of stakeholders, including:

  • Economic actors, such as rubber plantation owners or managers, land tenure or use-rights holders, representatives of workers or the industry, and participants in sustainability assurance or certification systems.
  • Social actors, including local and national NGOs, workers’ organisations and labour unions, and representatives of local communities or Indigenous and Traditional Peoples.
  • Environmental actors, such as environmental NGOs and associations, as well as local communities or Indigenous and Traditional Peoples’ representatives.
  • Other relevant stakeholders, including national bodies, RIA member organisations, certification bodies and assurance service providers, government and enforcement agencies, and research institutions.

Following the consultation period, the risk assessments will be made publicly available as an open resource, supporting risk-based approaches to sustainability, starting with RIA Members’ own assurance systems. It is also designed as a shared knowledge base for the targeted sectors to support due diligence, smallholder engagement, landscape initiatives, and continuous improvement efforts aligned with global sustainability frameworks.

As this is a pilot phase, both the drafting and consultation process will also inform the further development of RIA, helping identify opportunities for process improvement and supporting the development of additional joint risk assessments under the RIA framework.

If you are interested in contributing input on either or both risk assessments content, please download the documents and return the feedback form to Nicolas Viart (SBP) at nviart@sbp-cert.org and Ditte Steffensen (Preferred by Nature) at ds@pbn.org
